FAQ

What is the best way to determine what kind of soil I have?

By looking at the dirt's color, you can tell. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. Soil testing is another option. These tests are used to determine the quantity of nutrients in soil.

When is it best to plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. To get the best results, they should be planted in full sun. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. Once plants start growing, move them into bright indirect light. After three weeks, transplant the plants to individual containers. Water them frequently.

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends on the plant. Some plants need 12 hours per day of direct sunlight. Some plants prefer 8 hours of direct sunlight. The majority of vegetables require 10 hours of direct sunshine per 24 hour period.

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

The combination of tomatoes and peppers is great because they love the same temperatures and soil conditions. They can complement each other because tomatoes require heat to mature, and peppers require lower temperatures for their optimal flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

What month is the best time to start a garden?

Planting vegetables in April and June is the best time. This is when the soil is warmest and plants grow fastest. You might want to wait until July/August if you live in a cold area.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
