Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
