How many hours of daylight does a plant really need?

No, not really. All you need is a shovel, trowel, watering can, and maybe a rake.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
