FAQ

What is the purpose of a planting calendar?

A planting calendar is a list of plants that should be planted at different times throughout the year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. Early spring crops like spinach, lettuce, and peas must be sow after the last frost date. Spring crops later include squash, cucumbers, summer beans, and squash. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

What is the minimum space required to grow vegetables?

One square foot of soil will require 1/2 pound of seeds. This is a good rule of thumb. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. When the weather is warm, transplant the pepper and tomato plants outside.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. Darker soils contain more organic matter than lighter-colored ones. Soil testing is another option. These tests determine the amount of nutrients in the soil.

Which month is the best to start a vegetable gardening?

It is best to plant vegetables between April and June. This is when the soil gets warmest, and plants tend to grow quickly. If you live in a cold climate, you may want to wait until July or August.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
