FAQ

When is the best time to plant flowers?

Spring is the best season to plant flowers. It is when the temperatures are warmer and the soil is still moist. If you live in a cold area, plant flowers only after the first frost. The ideal temperature indoors for plants is around 60°F.

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

Tomato seeds are the best choice for starting indoors. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. It is important to be careful when planting tomatoes in containers. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. It is important to be aware that bacteria wilt can quickly kill plants.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal of a planting calendar is to maximize plant growth and minimize stress. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. Fall crops include cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and cauliflower.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. When the weather is warm, transplant the pepper and tomato plants outside.

Do I need any special equipment?

It's not true. All you need is a shovel, trowel, watering can, and maybe a rake.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
