How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
