FAQ

What is the best vegetable garden layout?

It is important to consider where you live when planning your vegetable garden. For easy harvesting, you can plant vegetables together if the area is large. If you live in rural areas, space your plants to maximize yield.

What's the best way to keep my indoor plant alive?

Indoor plants can live for many years. To ensure new growth, it's important that you repot indoor plants every few years. Repotting is simple. Just remove the old soil, and then add fresh compost.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. They can complement each other because tomatoes require heat to mature, and peppers require lower temperatures for their optimal flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

Which seeds should you start indoors?

A tomato seed is the best seed to start indoors. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. You should also be aware of diseases like bacterial Wilt that can quickly kill your plants.

Does my backyard have enough room for a vegetable garden?

You might be wondering if you have enough space to grow a vegetable garden if you don't have one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. Raised beds can be built as low as 6 inches. Containers can be used in place of raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

What type of lighting is best to grow plants indoors?

Because they emit less heat, floralescent lights are great for indoor gardening. They can also provide steady lighting without flickering and dimming. Fluorescent bulbs can be purchased in regular and compact fluorescent versions. CFLs require 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
