How to Grow Thai Basil

thai basil plant

If you want to grow a fresh basil plant, start by preparing the ground for it. In a sunny location with warm temperatures, the basil plant will thrive. If you don’t have the space to grow it outdoors, you can purchase a pot that you can use to start your seedlings indoors. The seedlings can then be planted outdoors once they have been protected from frost. You should ensure that the plant has adequate air circulation and drainage. Also, make sure to change the water as necessary.

Thai basil plants can be expensive. They require more water to thrive than other varieties. Although it is best to grow this herb in humid and warm climates, it can also be grown in semi-arid or arid environments. It is best to buy seeds if you plan to grow it in your own garden. Buy seeds from a trusted source to ensure a healthy plant.

Thai basil plants can also grown in a plant pot or in a small garden. You can grow the plant indoors by making sure the soil is slightly acidic. To improve the soil, you can add compost. You can also buy plants from a nursery, and then grow them indoors. Although you can grow the plant at any time of the year it is best to start the process after the last frost. This will ensure that the plants are fully grown and ready for harvest.

Watering your Thai basil plant is easy. You just need to make sure that you water it at least twice a week. Once it's time to let it grow, rotate it and give it six hours of direct sunshine each day. Maintaining a moderate moisture level in the soil will help prevent waterlogging roots. It is important to check the soil moisture of your Thai basil plant every now and again. Apply water to any soil that is too dry.

Thai basil is a tropical perennial that can also be grown indoors. Choose a sunny window to plant it in. Make sure to place it in an area with good drainage. The seeds can also be sown in the early spring and late summer. The plant can grow in any climate, but it prefers a sunny location. The plant requires at least six hours of sun each day. Although it can tolerate partial shade indoors the plant needs at most six hours of sunlight daily. If your indoor environment is not very sunny, try placing it near a small fan to provide some ventilation.

To prune your Thai basil plant, wait for the leaves to be at least two inches tall. Reduce any plant with fewer leaves than you want to keep. Trim the plants to about three-quarters of their original height after the leaves have reached approximately two inches. This will allow you to keep the best-looking plants. You can then harvest the leaves. Your plant's size will dictate how often you prune them.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
