For an ideal backyard ecosystem, look for native plants. To attract monarch butterflies, milkweed is an excellent choice. FAQ

What is a planting calendar?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal of a planting calendar is to maximize plant growth and minimize stress. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and cauliflower.

Are pots possible to grow fruit trees?

Yes! Yes! Make sure your pot is drained to prevent the tree from getting rotted by excess moisture. Also ensure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the root ball. This will stop the tree becoming stressed.

When is it best to plant herbs?

When the soil temperature is 55°F, herbs should be planted in spring. To get the best results, they should be planted in full sun. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. Once the plants begin to grow properly, you should move them into bright indirect lights. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

Can I grow vegetables indoors

Yes, you can grow vegetables inside in the winter. You will need a greenhouse or grow lighting. Before buying a greenhouse, check with your local laws.

What's the first thing you should do when you begin a garden project?

When beginning a garden, the first thing to do is to prepare the soil. This includes adding organic material such as composted horse manure, grass clippings or leaves, straw and the like, which provides plant nutrients. Next, place seeds or seedlings in prepared holes. Finally, make sure to water thoroughly.

What length of time can I keep an indoor flower alive?

Indoor plants can last for many years. To promote new growth, it is essential to repot your indoor plants every few month. Repotting is simple. Remove the old soil and place fresh compost.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
