How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of the most versatile herbs you can use in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavouring dishes, as well as adding flavor to soups and sauces, pasta, and desserts. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should not be planted more than two weeks prior to the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Place the pots in clear plastic wrap. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Germination takes approximately ten days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Add potting mix to each container. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. The plants should be misted daily to prevent them from wilting.
  4. After the danger of frost has passed, apply a thick layer of mulch over the top of the plants. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. Pick your basil when it reaches its prime. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels to dry leaves. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
